Lakes and Forests are Natural Companions

A few days ago a tweet from President Obama described how natural reserves are being expanded in USA by his actions. I tweeted back my congratulations but also added a suggestion to the President – Please enhance the natural beauty and usefulness by adding to these lands, more lakes and forests.

With recent climate extremes many have realized usefulness of forests in mitigating adverse climate conditions and efforts are underway in many countries to increase forest lands. This effort by humans is needed because in the past, humans have removed many trees and forests from the land in order to meet their immediate short term needs. While it is a good idea to create more forests it is also worth creating more lakes within these forests. Such lakes add to the beauty and also help increase ground water levels. That is where tree roots find water when it has been a dry season for an extended period. This note is too brief for the topic of creation of lakes and forests. Much information is widely available on it elsewhere. However some points may be listed that this author considers useful in this direction

Forests:

  1. Rather than planting a dense forest it is more natural and useful to plant a sparse one with a distance of around 25 feet between new trees in every direction. Over a period of time through wind, birds and animal other growth and trees comes up in the vacant spaces that are natural to the area and helps in creating a fully natural forest over a period of 25 years or so.
  2. It is useful if the initial trees planted are nut and fruit trees. However care must be taken not to plant the same kind all through to maintain bio-diversity and health of the forest.

Lakes:

  1. Locations for a new lake can be found on the path of a perennial or seasonal water stream or channel in the forest. By digging around it, a lake may be created that shall fill up in rainy seasons
  2. Care must be taken to ensure that at least two thirds of the sides are very gradually sloped, so that birds and animals may walk down to water when level falls in dry seasons. However a portion may be left steep to permit sufficient depth for fish to seek shelter in.
  3. Lakes must be left unlined and free of cement in order to become healthy natural lakes over a period of time rather than artificial tanks but rounded river rocks and some river sand may be spread at the bottom of the newly created lake to improve water retention and create a more natural lake bottom
