As a fresh new academic at the Indian Institute of
Technology at Delhi,
I lived in a small compact two room flat in the beginning until a bigger home
was found for our growing family. The two rooms along with a kitchen and bathroom
had been laid out in an extremely simple yet efficient layout. Inspired by that
layout a design of a two room cottage is suggested here as follows. The room widths in this layout are fourteen feet, they could be increased or reduced down to eleven feet for the design to be still functional. Fine details of the design are not included here but these are easily figured out by an engineer familiar with home designs or an architect. This blogger will also explain if asked in the comments.
Adding a Staircase
It may be noted that the present design does not have any
side windows hence it is easy to set extensions on the side. An extension can
be reached easily from the central passage between the bathroom and kitchen.
Once a full length staircase well is added, it can lead another smaller room
that may be used for a child or study. Another small store can also be
extracted under the staircase.
Such a staircase well can be shared between two mirror image
apartments too and if identical portions are constructed on top, it would lead a
complex of four independent cottages. A larger complex of more cottages in
multiples of four may also be constructed in a row as a complex that would be
suitable for senior citizens on the ground floor and young couples on the first
floor.
Variation
A variation of the design is possible by shifting the passage towards the back rather than the side as follow
